The banker John Smith (1797–1866) was a partner in Beckett's Bank. He was a resident of both Belvedere in Harrogate, and Burley House, in Burley, Leeds. He was a philanthropist who paid most of the costs of building St Matthias Church and its vicarage, Burley, and St Matthias Church of England Primary School, Burley.
