John Nader (1839-1919) was an architect whose career began with the Corps of Engineers in New York. In 1871, he moved to Portage, Wisconsin, as Assistant U.S. Engineer in charge of the Wisconsin River improvement, and in 1879 he moved his headquarters to Madison. From 1876 to 1880 and again from 1884 to 1887 he served as Madison's chief engineer, and in this capacity he was involved in designing the city's first sewage treatment plan. He designed numerous buildings in Wisconsin and Michigan.
