- A canal built to facilitate shipments of passengers and freight by water between the western counties of Virginia and the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic coast.
- Personally surveyed and planned by George Washington, the canal was begun in 1785, and only half completed by 1851.
- On the National Register of Historic Places, and a designated Historic District in Virginia.
