James Hatsuaki Wakasa was a 63-year-old chef interned at Topaz War Relocation Center. On April 11, 1943, he was shot to death by a military sentry while walking his dog inside the barbed-wire fence. An unauthorized memorial created at the site after his funeral troubled the Topaz administration and was destroyed.
