J. Alphonse Pellion (1796–1868)[1] was a French midshipman[2] trained as a topographical draughtsman. In 1818 he was on board navigator Louis de Freycinet's ship Uranie which made a scientific voyage to the northern part of Western Australia, during which he helped to produce early records of Australian flora and fauna, and illustrated significant events from the journey.[1] In 1819, Governor of New South Wales Lachlan Macquarie invited French explorer Baudin to cross the Blue Mountains on a new road, and Pellion accompanied him.[2]
