English: Italian Renaissance gardens — originating in Italy and influential abroad during the European Renaissance.
- The gardens emerged during the early Italian Renaissance in the late 15th century at villas in Rome and Florence — intended for the pleasure of the view of the garden from the villa, and the agricultural and natural landscapes beyond from villa and garden.
- The Italian Renaissance gardens were inspired by classical ideals of order and beauty, for the landscape's contemplation and for the enjoyment of particular sights, sounds and smells within the garden itself.
- In the late Renaissance, the gardens became larger, more axial and symmetrical, and grander by being filled with fountains, statues, grottoes, water organs, and other features designed to delight and amuse residents and guests.
- The Italian Renaissance garden style was imitated throughout Europe during the Renaissance, and influenced the subsequent styles of the French Barqoue garden à la française and the English landscape park garden. The Italian influence and inspiration returned in the latter 19th century estates of the 'Golden Age' barons in the United States and other countries, and continues at various scales into the present day.
