Indianur, also spelled Indyanur or Indianoor, is a historic village near Kottakkal that is mentioned as a religious site in regional inscriptions dated to the 10th to 12th century. The Maha Ganapathy Kshetra is a tirtha site with attestable history from at least the 10th century, with monuments that are likely from pre-9th century period.
The temple has a regionally popular Ganesha artwork and shrine. However, the historic site was originally co-dedicated to a major Shiva temple and a major Vishnu temple. These pre-9th century monuments were damaged after the 14th-century during regional wars, but they survive and have been restored. The site has been a source of historically significant inscriptions.
