English: The Monongahela Connecting Railroad bridge and Hot Metal bridge is a pair of nearly identical steel truss bridges constructed in 1887 on the same piers. The upstream span formerly held two tracks of the Monongahela Connecting Railroad, while the downstream span was used to transport hot metal in ladle railroad cars on one track from the blast furnaces to the rolling mills. The railroad element of the Hot Metal bridge system dubbed the Mon Con Bridge was reconstructed and opened for vehicular traffic in 2000, while the hot metal part was converted into a pedestrian bridge in 2007. A newly created transportation corridor now connects the Pittsburgh neighborhoods of Birmingham and South Oakland.
