Unit history

[edit]

(Minor changes in the exact titles omitted)

  • The "Reggimento delle guardie", raised in 1659, was renamed "Brigata granatieri guardie" in 1815 (thus inheriting the traditions of previous grenadier units) and 1º Reggimento "Granatieri di Sardegna" since 1852.
  • The "Reggimento di Sardegna", raised in 1744, was renamed "Reggimento cacciatori guardie" in 1816 and 2º Reggimento brigata "Granatieri" in 1850 (with "di Sardegna" added two years later).
  • A third regiment was raised in 1848 and named the same as the above (Brigata "Guardie", "Granatieri" in 1850 and "Granatieri di Sardegna" in 1852); in 1939 it was renamed "Granatieri di Sardegna e d'Albania", disbanded in 1943, and re-raised in 1976 as 3º Reggimento "Granatieri Guardie".

The motto of all Grenadier regiments was "A me le guardie per l'onore di casa Savoia!", eventually shortened to "A me le guardie!" .

Until 1871 a few regiments inherited from other Italian states bore grenadier titles; they subsequently became line infantry regiments (numbered 73, 74, 75, 76, 77 and 78).
