English: The Herrschaft Schmalkalden District (i.e. Lordship of Schmalkalden District; this name 1907-1946), also known as Schmalkalden District (1821-1907, 1946-1950) was founded as a district of the Electorate of Hesse-Kassel. After its annexation to Prussia the district formed part of the newly formed Kassel Region of the Prussian Hesse-Nassau province, was redistricted in 1944 to the Prussian Saxony province, Erfurt Region, the latter of which again merged formally in Thuringia in June 1945. In 1950 the district was dissolved, however two years later, with the dessolution of Thuringia, a new district of Schmalkalden was founded within the new East German Suhl Governorate (Bezirk Suhl).
