Opened in 1907, The Heinz Store was owned by Maurice Heinz. Initially a millinery store, it expanded to become a luxury department store in women's apparel. Heinz was born in Breslau Germany in 1852, and immigrated to the United States in the 1880s. Initially settling in Jersey City, New Jersey, he first opened a Millinery store in Wilkes-Barre and later in Scranton. He later opened a third store in Allentown. The Heinz Store eventually became a chain of four stores, located in different cities.

Originally at 812-814 Hamilton, it expanded in July 1918 to include the newly-erected building at 808-810 Hamilton. It was a major women's clothing store in the early part of the 20th Century on Hamilton Street. After returning from World War I in 1919, his son, Frank Heinz (Born May 1887 in NJ), took over the day-to-day management of the store. The store was said to have the most complete stock of ladies, misses and children's apparel outside of New York with lower prices.

In 1923 Maurice Heinz retired from the store after the passing of his wife. In 1926 he moved into the Hotel Allen as a permanent resident. He passed in Feburary 1945 in Allentown.

In Feb 1929, the store contracted back to the 812-814 building, vacating the 1918 expansion. The Heinz Store in Allentown closed in May 1932, a victim of the Great Depression. After the department store closed, Frank Heinz went into the insurance business in Allentown until retiring in 1944. Frank Heinz passed in June 1952 in Ventnor, New Jersey.
