A hanshita-e 版下絵 is the drawing created by a block cutter or given to a block cutter by a publisher or an artist. An existing print could also be used as a hanshita-e. The hanshita-e normally would be pasted face down on the block and destroyed as the block is carved. For this reason very few real hanshita-e survive.
