History
[edit]- 02/11/1941 Laid down for Port Line Ltd, London. Her intended name was PORT PIRIE. Construction delayed as yard labour diverted to work on naval tonnage.
- 09/07/1942 Purchased on the stocks by the Admiralty for 'Special Service'.
- 20/05/1943: Launched as the escort carrier HMS NAIRANA.
- 12/12/1943: Completed. Her armament comprised 2 4", 16 2pdr and 16 20mm guns, and 18 aircraft.
- 03/1946 until 1948 Loaned to the Royal Netherlands Navy as KAREL DOORMAN.
- 1948 Returned to the Admiralty.
- 06/1948 Repurchased by Port Line Ltd, sent to Belfast for re-conversion to merchant ship and renamed PORT VICTOR. *16/06/1948 Registered at London and given official number 181935. (Tonnage 16205 gross)
- 10/1949 Departed on maiden commercial voyage.
