Talakad, also spelled as Talakadu or Talkad in the modern age, was a major city before the 11th-century and the ancient capital of the Gangas dynasty. It is referred to as Dalavanapura as well as Gajaranya in Sanskrit texts dated between the 4th century and the 10th cenury. Now in Mysuru district, it is home to many major Vishnu temples, many of them built or expanded in the 11th to 12th-century.
