The inscription on this monument says: "In affectionate remembrance of Captain W.E.D. Spring, H.M. 1st Battalion 24th Regiment, who died at Harrogate on the 13th June 1886 aged 31 years. This cross is erected by the officers, noncommissioned officers and men of his regiment. He was loved by all ranks. Looking unto Jesus who loved me and gave himself for me."

Further information: "Spring, F. Lieutenant, 24th Regiment, 22nd April, 1842 ; captain, Hth January, 1849. Killed in action at Jhelum, 7th July, 1857. Spring, W. E. D. Lieutenant, 24th Regiment, 30th April, 1875; captain, 1st January, 1881. Served in Kaffir war, 1878 (medal and clasp). Died, 13th January, 1886. Captain W. E. D. Spring was Ihe son of Captain F.
