The inscription on this monument says: In loving memory of Pte Alfred Bruce, 1st 4th K.O.Y.L.I., late of County Hall, Wakefield. Drowned on duty Feb 19th 1915, aged 21 years." Private Bruce was one of seven soldiers who drowned in the river at Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, while training.
