The inscription on the gravestone of Major Cowling (1841–1866) says:

• "In affectionate remembrance of Major Cowling, sculptor, Harrogate, who died July 14th 1866, aged 36 years. Also Major, son of the above, who died February 25th 1867, aged 8 years. Thy will be done. Also Mary, mother of the above, who died January 30th 1876, aged 82 years. Also Elizabeth, widow of the above, who died at Bournemouth February 16th 1912".
