The second of the four separate inscriptions on this monument is mostly illegible in the photographs, because the engraved letters are no longer highlighted with colour, and they are camouflaged within the strong figuring of the marble. Some images have been enhanced in an attempt to clarify some of the words, especially of that second inscription. The legible parts of the inscriptions are as follows:

  • "The burial ground of William Jackson."
  • "In memory of William Jackson ... and his wife Elizabeth ..."
  • "Also of Henry Hall Jackson M.C., M.A., Captain XVth The King's Hussars, youngest son of the late William and Elizabeth Jackson of Harrogate, who died November 28th 1918, aged 28 years. To live in the hearts of those we love is not to die.
  • "McMillan, Sunderland" (the sculptor of the monument).

William Jackson (died 1894) was a rich councillor and wine merchant of Harrogate and Sunderland who owned over 30 public houses. See National Archives and Sunderland Daily Echo and Shipping Gazette 11 June 1894, "The late Coun. Jackson", p.4 col.2

Note: some images in this category may have been enhanced so that researchers can read the inscription.
