Notes:

  • (1) Some of the photographs in this category, which were taken on 28 January 2023, are edited to facilitate reading of the inscriptions. If improving that set of photographs, please upload the new version in a separate image file. Thank you.
  • (2) Also included in this category is a secondary smaller gravestone which appears to refer to the same family vault, because the two monuments are very close together, and Ellis married into the Bates family.
  • (3) This obelisk is taller than most (if not all) of the grave monuments in this cemetery.
  • (4) An attempt has been made, below, to transcribe the inscriptions, but the figured marble on the obelisk monument causes difficulty. So the following transcription will remain incomplete until we can get further information.

The inscriptions on the obelisk monument are as follows:

  • "In memory of Richard Ellis of this place, who died 7th September 1871, aged 76 years. Also of Ann Atkinson wife of the above, who died 12th February 1872 age 80 years. Also of Richard Ellis son of the above, who died 21 August 1895 aged 74 years. Also of Mary Jane wife of Richard Ellis Jnr, who died 5th August 1897 aged 74 years".
  • "In loving memory of Samuel Ellis who died August 14th 1898 aged 72 years. Also of Isabella wife of the above who died February (23rd?) (1915/18?) aged (85/95?) years".
  • "Also of Ann Raworth, grand daughter of the above, who died 24th October 1866 aged 18 years. Also of Elizabeth Bates who died (30th?) October (1868?) aged (44?) years".

The inscription on the tablet monument nearby is as follows:

  • "In affectionate remembrance of John Bates, ironmonger of this place, who died on the 18th of June 1866 aged 34 years. Also of William Young, father in law of the above, who died on the 21st of December 1871 aged 73 years. Also Elizabeth widow of the above William Young, who died at Harrogate May 30th 1891 aged 80 years. Also of Jane widow of the above John Bates, who died May 21st 1898 aged 68 years".
