The first building at Swillington Hall (later called Swillington House) was built in 1690 for the Lowther family, and it was remodelled in 1738 and 1804. It became a military hospital in World War I, and was demolished in 1952 due to subsidence caused by coalmining below the building. The stable still exists. For further information, see Swillington House Hospital.
