A concept within the framework of shinbutsu shūgō (syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism), a gongen (権現) is a local manifestation of an Indian buddha or bodhisattva as a Japanese kami, believed to be a skillful means enacted by the former in order guide the Japanese to salvation.
