Gimlets, hand tools used for making an initial location hole in wood, before driving a screw or drilling a larger hole. They have a screw-shaped starting tip and are rotated by hand.
Bradawls have a similar purpose, but have a blunt chisel tip and are pushed straight.
For hard metal, centre punches are used instead, hit by a hammer.
