George B. Matthews (1857-1944) was an American painter. He was born in 1857 in Tappahannock, Virginia. He studied in Paris in the early 1880s, particularly with the painter Carolus Duran. Upon his return to Virginia he opened a studio in Richmond, but soon moved to Washington, where he spent the balance of his career. Matthews specialized in portraiture, landscape, and Southern history painting, particularly of the Confederate period. Matthews was intermittently employed at the U. S. Capitol over a 50-year period as a painter and restorer of art. He painted some original portraits of officials, copied others, and worked on a restoration of the Capitol Building's Brumidi Corridors from 1928 to 1935; several of his works are on display throughout the Capitol and other federal buildings. The works that he produced as an employee of the federal government are in the public domain.
