Note that gavit is identified as follows: "A gavit (Armenian գավիթ) or zhamatun (Armenian: ժամատուն) is often contiguous to the west of a church in a Medieval Armenian monastery. It served as narthex (entrance to the church), mausoleum and assembly room." So it is not the church itself, which is the Church of the Holy Mother of God. That is in poor shape, having lost its dome. The gavit is is a square structure, 14 by 14 metres, built of well cut stone, and divided into 9 bays. Four pillars, with frescoes on their sides, support the roof.

English: Gavit (narthex) of Varag Monastery, dedicated to Saint George
