Garcia de Orta - The Portuguese Medicine (1906)
"The Portuguese Medicine" (1906), one of the eight painted panneaux by Veloso Salgado to decorate the frieze of the Great Hall of the new Lisbon Medico-Surgical School building (currently, the main building of the NOVA Medical School, Faculty of Medical Sciences of Nova University of Lisbon).
This panel features twelve Portuguese scholars and physicians who contributed to medical knowledge: José Lourenço da Luz Gomes (1800-1882), António Bernardino da Silva (1813-1888), José Tomás de Sousa Martins (1843-1897), Luís da Câmara Pestana (1863-1899), Manuel Bento de Sousa (1835-1899), Manuel Alves Constâncio (1726-1817), António de Almeida (1791-1822), António Nunes Ribeiro Sanches (1699-1783), Ambrósio Nunes (1529-1611), Zacuto Lusitano (1557-1642), Amato Lusitano (1511-1568), and Garcia de Orta (1501-1568).
