Fort Dix began in June 1917 as Camp Dix, a training and staging ground for units during World War I. Camp Dix became Fort Dix on March 8, 1939. On October 1, 2009, Fort Dix combined with McGuire Air Force Base, and Naval Air Engineering Station Lakehurst to become Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst.
