W C Durant and J D Dort established a business in Flint, Michigan in 1886 selling single-seater carts of a patented design which they had made for them by firms of carriage builders. In 1893 they took on assembly in their own factory and soon established or bought their own component suppliers. They changed its name to Durant-Dort Carriage in 1895.
