The manor of Norbury in Derbyshire was held in 1081 by Henry de Ferrers. The fee-farm was granted to William FitzHerbert in 1125 by the Prior of Tutbury Abbey (Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, p.355). The distinctive chief appears to represent the arms of Ferrers, Earl of Derby: Vairy or and gules, as overlord of this or some other Derbyshire manor, emphasised by debruisement by a bend for difference. In 1562 the manor of Swynnerton, Staffordshire, was inherited by William Fitzherbert, 3rd son of Sir Anthony Fitzherbert of Norbury, on his marriage to the heiress Elizabeth de Swynnerton. In 1649 the Norbury and Swynnerton estates were united when John Fitzherbert of Norbury bequeathed his estates to his cousin William Fitzherbert of Swynnerton.
