The Film and Publication Board, or for short, FPB, is an age rating system created in 1996 for films, television, video games, and certain publications. The current age ratings are:

• A - Suitable for all ages.
• PG - All ages admitted, but some scenes may be unsuitable for young children. Parental guidance is recommended.
• 7-9PG - No children under 7 years of age will be admitted, and children aged between 7 and 9 years must be accompanied by an adult. (There is no logo with the old style)
• 10-12PG - No children under 10 years of age will be admitted, and children aged between 10 and 12 years must be accompanied by an adult. (There is no logo with the old style)
• 13 - No children under 13 years of age will be admitted.
• 16 - No one under 16 years of age will be admitted. Can only broadcast on TV from 9pm-4:30am.
• 18 - For adults only. No one under 18 years of age will be admitted. Can only broadcast on TV from 10pm-4:30am.
• X18 - For adults only. Can only be supplied in adult premises. X18-rated content may not be broadcast on TV or radio.
• XX - The media is not suitable for exhibiting or distributing anywhere in South Africa. The mere possession remains legal.
• Refused classification - Not suitable for exhibiting, distributing, or possessing in South Africa. There is no logo yet.

The content descriptors are:

• B - Blasphemy (No logo yet)
• CI - Competitive Intensity (No logo yet)
• CT - Criminal Techniques (No logo yet)
• D - Drugs (The logo indicates the white text "D" inside a gray circle without an outline)
• H - Horror (The logo indicates the white text "H" inside a dark purple circle without an outline)
• IAT - Imitative Acts and Techniques (No logo yet)
• L - Language (The logo indicates the white text "L" inside a blue circle without an outline)
• N - Nudity (The logo indicates the black text "N" inside a white circle with a black outline)
• P - Prejudice (The logo indicates the black text "P" inside a yellow circle without an outline)
• PPS - Photo Pattern Sensitivity (No logo yet)
• S - Sex (the logo indicates the white text "S" inside a red circle without an outline)
• SV - Sexual Violence (the logo indicates the white text "SV" inside a red circle without an outline)
• V - Violence (the logo indicates the white text "V" inside a red circle without an outline)

The former age ratings are:

• 10M - Children aged under 10 years must be accompanied by an adult. There is no age limit if accompanied by an adult. (There is no logo with the new style)
• 10 - No children under 10 years of age will be admitted. (There is no logo with the new style)
