Fighter-Interceptor Squadrons (FIS) were assigned primarily to the United States Air Defense Command (ADC) and later the Aerospace Defense Command (ADCOM). Their mission was specifically the defense of United States Airspace. Outside of the Continental United States (CONUS), Fighter-Interceptor Squadrons were assigned to Pacific Air Forces (PACAF) for the air defense of Japan and Okinawa. The United States Air Forces in Europe (USAFE) were assigned Interceptor Squadrons for the defense of NATO airspace in Western Europe and Iceland. Alaskan Air Command operated FIS from forward operating bases along the western coast of Alaska. The Hawaiian Air National Guard was assigned the air defense mission of its territorial and later state airspace from its origins in 1947.

The Air National Guard has had numerous state Fighter-Interceptor Squadrons that were allocated to Air Defense Command beginning in the 1940s. In the 1980s, ADCOM was inactivated and the CONUS, Alaskan and Hawaiian air defense mission was primarily assigned to the Air National Guard, coordinated by First Air Force (AFNORTH).

This continues to the present day in conjunction with the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD).
