Category:Ficus microcarpa of Boulia Shire, Central Western Queensland
A single Ficus microcarpa, a strangling banyan fig, has been planted near the Boulia Shire library. A seedling from this tree has established epiphytically on the stump of a dead street tree in Burke St, Boulia. It is likely that several hundred kilometres separate the Boulia Ficus microcarpa from their nearest conspecifics. The obligate pollinating fig wasp associated with Ficus microcarpa is Eupristina verticillata. That a wasp of only a few millimetres in length and an adult lifespan of a few days could find its way across several hundred kilometres of semi-arid country and then locate a single Ficus microcarpa, that fortuitously had its figs in their female phase, is yet another example of the astounding dispersal abilities of fig wasps.
