On June 6, 1925, Walter Chrysler founded the Chrysler Corporation through the restructure of the Maxwell Motor Company. Maxwell was previously one of the top automakers in the U.S., but the company overextended itself and was bogged down in debt going into the 1920s.
Chrysler, after leaving Buick and later Willys-Overland, took over Maxwell in 1921 with a reputation of troubleshooting and cleaning up problems with auto manufacturers. Chrysler’s answer to Maxwell’s financial woes was a new model dubbed the Chrysler Six (pictured), a high-powered, yet low-cost car. More than 30,000 units were sold in the first year.
Following that success, Chrysler was able to reorganize Maxwell Motor Company into the Chrysler Corporation, kicking off one of the most successful automotive companies in history
