The first to adopt this heraldic arrangement was w:Robert FitzWalter (d.1235), feudal baron of Little Dunmow in Essex, as a difference of the arms of de Clare (Or, three chevrons gules), borne by his second cousin Gilbert de Clare, 5th Earl of Gloucester, 4th Earl of Hertford (d.1230). Some of his feudal tenants, such as Baynard and Cornard, adopted differences of his arms.
