The Federal Writers' Project was an American New Deal program of the Works Progress Administration, one of the arts projects known collectively as Federal Project Number One, part of the WPA Division of Professional and Service Projects. The Federal Writers' Project was organized in 1935 to give employment to writers, editors, historians, researchers, art critics, archaeologists, geologists and cartographers. Until October 1936 the project included the Historical Records Survey, which documented resources for research in U.S. history. The Federal Writers' Project created the American Guide Series, guidebooks for every U.S. state and select territories. Another important part of the project was to record oral histories such as the Slave Narratives and the Oneida Language and Folklore Project.
