The Fayetteville Arsenal in Fayetteville, North Carolina, was a federal military facility used to store military equipment prior to the Civil War. After NC seceded from the Union, it was seized and operated by the Confederacy. During the Confederate period of operation it was used to repair and modernize older weapons and to manufacture new weapons such as the Fayetteville Rifle. The machinery used in the manufacture of these rifles was brought to Fayetteville from the arsenal at Harper's Ferry after its seizure by the Confederacy. It remained in operation until being destroyed by Union troops under the command of Major General William Tecumseh Sherman in March, 1865.
