Faults are deep fractures in rocks, along which movement has occured. Joints are fractures in rocks in which no movement has occured. Weathering is often concentrated along faults and joints. On Mars, both of these may be caused by stress in the crust. The weight of volcanoes could cause enough stress to form faults and joints.
