English: From the designation:The property at 36 Toronto Street, the Excelsior Life Building, is designated on architectural grounds. Designed b E.J. Lennox and built in 1914-15, it is a significant example of an office and commercial building by this prominent Toronto architect. The distinctive features of the facade include the two-storey granite base with its recessed shop-front entrances and finely detailed fenestration; the terracotta of the upper floors; and the attic floors with fluted two-storey Corinthian columns. This building is an important part of the significant group of historic buildings flanking Toronto Street.
- Aetna Life bought Financial Life and Excelsior Life and then Maritime Life bought Aetna Life. Maritime Life later became Manulife.
