The school basement was being used as an air raid shelter during World War II. It was hit by a parachute mine on 29th November 1940, killing 166 people. Several families were wiped out. It is commemorated today by this plinth containing a letter from HM The Queen Mother in Old College Place, off Durning Road, Edge Hill, Liverpool. Link
