Equestrian Portrait as a separate, important subject of iconography, appeared in Poland together with the accession to the throne of Sigismund III. The Audience Room at the Royal Castle in Warsaw was adorned with equestrian portraits of Sigismund III by Dolabella, complemented by horseback portraits of Władysław IV and Cecilia Renata painted in 1639 by Danckers de Rij and the equestrian portrait of John Casimir from 1649. |
