Her Majesty's Coastguard chartered 5 large ocean-going emergency tow vessels, from 1993 through 2011. Four were stationed at strategic locations around the coast, while the fifth filled in when a vessel was being repaired, or was on an assignment expected to take several days. In 2011 the government asserted that salvage should be a private matter between ship owners and private salvage firms, dropped the contract, saying this would save UK taxpayers 32 million pounds.
