The United States Army Air Service formed service squadrons during the 1920s, but they were replaced in 1926 by the Army Air Corps as support units. In the fall of 1940 when base headquarters and air base squadrons were expanded into air base groups, they were organized with one or two integral material squadrons. In January 1941, these squadrons were numbered in a separate series. In June and July 1942, these materiel squadrons were renamed service squadrons and assigned to service groups. Shortly before the end of World War II, most service groups were replaced by new model air service groups and inactivated or disbanded. A few remained and their squadrons were retitled air service squadrons.

These units were maintenance organizations and should not be confused with the USAF's services squadrons.
