Services Squadrons were first formed by the United States Air Force in the mid 1960s, by expanding the mission of former Food Service Squadrons to include such things as management of recreation and associated facilities. Between 1992 and 1994, in some commands they were designated Morale, Welfare, Recreation and Services Squadrons. In 2002, they were combined with Mission Support Squadrons to form Force Support Squadrons. They should not be confused with World War II Service Squadrons, which were aircraft maintenance units.
