Andrew Durnford was the son of Thomas Durnford - second cousin of Elias Durnford and his son Elias Walker Durnford.
Thomas and Andrew were long-term slave-owning plantation owners in Alabama and Louisiana. The elder Elias also briefly owned a large plantation in British run West Florida, when he was British Lieutenant-Governor there, during the American Revolution.
Andrew's mother was a free woman of color, making him a rare instance of a black slave-owner. Elias Walker Durnford spent over fifteen years trying to claim Thomas's estate, arguing that Thomas never married Andrew's mother.
