Basic arms & blazon

[edit]

First adopted by w:Waleran III, Duke of Limburg (c.1165-1226), younger son of w:Henry III, Duke of Limburg (c.1140-1221) and Sophia of Saarbrücken. In 1214 he married w:Ermesinde, Countess of Luxembourg, and became Count of Luxembourg jure uxoris. Ermesinda claimed the County of Namur and so Waleran added a crown to his arms to symbolise this claim. In 1221 he inherited the Duchy of Limburg and added a second tail to the lion on his arms. This symbolised his holding of two great fiefs.
