Note: In British law, copyright pertaining to knitting patterns is a special case:

  • Published written and/or printed knitting patterns, their verbatim phraseology, and any illustrations by the pattern designer, are subject to the same copyright as any other creative published written material in the UK. Original samples and test pieces personally knitted up by the designer are also the copyright of the designer.
  • However, when a crafter purchases and knits up that pattern, the crafter may not copyright the original designer's pattern as their own work in their knitted product. They may not copyright any minor changes to the pattern, otherwise they would be preventing all the other crafters who coincidentally made the same minor changes (e.g. knitting a stripe in red instead of blue, or knitting a figure with or without a hat, or with different hair). The original designer may not copyright every crafter's attempt to knit up the design in question, because if they did, it would deny crafters the freedom to knit up the designs, especially when forced to make variations due to recommended colours being unavailable, or due to lack of skill in the crafter. Therefore, that kind of knitted-up object is a grey area, and in general terms not considered a copyright issue in the UK.
  • This category is for objects which were knitted up by members of the public who purchased Greenhowe's patterns.
