After the death (1782) of Simon August , „Count of Lippe“, his young son Leopold I., „Prince of Lippe“, took over the government in November 1789, and still in the same year he inaugurated in the former Lustgarten park of Detmold a monument in honour of his father, created by German sculptor Schlupf. Later on the monument was moved to several places south of the town: to Palaisgarten, then next to Mausoleum am Büchenberg and to some other locations in Friedrichstal. Since 1985 the monument is located in the street Parkallee near the entrance to the spa gardens of the nearby town of Horn-Bad Meinberg.
