Arms of de Ros, feudal barons of Kendal, Westmorland: Or, three water bougets sable (a difference of de Ros, feudal barons of Helmsley, Yorkshire and feudal barons of Belvoir, Leicestershire, by writ Baron de Ros (cr.1289))
A quarter share of the feudal barony of Kendal was acquired by Robert de Ros (d.1274) of Wark, Northumberland (a junior branch of de Ros, feudal barons of Helmsley, his father Sir Robert de Ros (d.1269) of Wark having been the younger son of Sir Robert de Ros (d.1226) of Helmsley) on his marriage to Margaret de Brus, one of the 4 sisters and co-heiresses of Peter de Brus (d.1272), feudal baron of Kendal. The eldest son and heir of Robert de Ros (d.1274) of Wark, was Robert de Ros, 1st Baron Ros of Wark (d.1296) who died without male issue. His younger son was William de Ros of Kendal, founder of that branch of the family, who was given Kendal by his heiress mother Margaret de Brus (Cokayne, G. E. & Geoffrey H. White, eds.
