Galvanometers using the D'Arsonval or Weston movements.
The D'Arsonval movement is earlier and introduced the central iron core, which produces the radial linear magnetic field across the pole gap that is the key to a linear response. Weston introduced the mechanical improvements of pivot bearings, hairsprings and a conductive damping ring. Almost all instruments are of the Weston pattern, although both names are widely used.
