The crest of the Singapore Municipal Commission was adopted some time in 1913, possibly after its reorganization under the Municipal Ordinance of that year. The device is not a coat of arms as it lacks a shield or escutcheon with charges. The crest depicts a gold lion statant (standing with all four paws on the ground) in front of a fruiting areca palm tree (Areca catechu), and may be described in heraldic terms as "in front of a palm tree fructed proper, a lion statant Or". In 1948, this device was incorporated into the coat of arms of the Singapore Municipal Corporation as its crest, though in the coat of arms the lion was depicted passant (walking with its right fore paw in the air) rather than statant.
