English: Works copyrighted before 1964 had to have the copyright renewed sometime in the 28th year. If a copyright was not renewed, the work is in the public domain. LIFE issues from vol. 16 n. 1 1944 to the vol. 18 n. 13 1945 issue are in public domain as their copyright was not renewed. To verify public domain status of other issues, online page scans of the Catalog of Copyright Entries, published by the US Copyright Office, can be found here. Since some magazines are published the month before the cover date and some are not registered for a few months after publication, it is necessary to search six months before and after the year of publication.
